ECU Calibration and Emissions tests on Engine Test Benches
Following
to the Geneva Convention of 1979, many antipollution regulations occurred.
Today, heavy-duty engine manufacturers must apply on their new engines
certification tests such as EURO III, EURO IV and US Heavy Duty Transient
Cycle. The implementation of normalized tests on a certification test
bench is the last step of a new engine development process. Before to
reach this step, the way is long and complex, as the engine control parameters
are increasing due to new technologies. It is during the engine calibration
step where these parameters are adjusted. To speed up this step, test
centres have to optimize their work methods and their test equipments.
D2T have works in that direction, offering innovating solutions to perform
easily engine’s certification tests with all associated calculations.

Diesel multi-injection combustion noise evaluation
SIA 2004 International Conferences « Diesel : Today and Tomorow
» The main task in diesel engine tuning is to meet the emission
regulations, keeping customer’s satisfaction (fuel economy, torque,
noise,…), and reducing tuning cost.
Using a standard combustion analysis tool named Osiris, a new method
has been developed to adapt the calibration combustion noise criteria
to multi-injection strategies on the entire engine operating range.By
using multiple maximum pressure gradients and their locations in the
cycle, combustion noise integration in the calibration process can be
more accurate and therefore improved.
First results from automatic calibration testing are very promising.

On-line
Plausibility check
Engine parameters increase make more complex engine’s tests calibration.
But at the same time, engine manufacturer want to reduce the time dedicated
to these tests. So, test centers must improve their productivity optimizing
tests tools.
For this purpose, during the 5th cycle of conference CNAM-SIA “rational
use of energy”, D2T presents its solution for on-line plausibility
check applied to engine test bed.

Reducing torsional vibrations by firing order tuning on a V-engine
Torsional behaviour optimisation of high speed V-engines is possible through
a smart firing order tuning choice with the use of specifically designed
analysis tools. Using dummy datas of V-engine, our software Vibmot illustrates
compromises to determine the best firing order depending of the most frequently
used range of rotation speed. Alternative solutions which can avoid the
compromise imply the use of pendulum vibration absorbers tuned on the
most pre-eminent harmonics.

Scavenging test rig
D2T group has developped an hydraulic machine allowing the study of a
scavenging. The hydraulic machine is cheaper than the building of a real
prototype, more precise than the CFD, able to give a visualisation of
the scavenging losses and allows to test very quickly a lot of configurations.

Engine scavenging optimization
In order to meet future emission standard, it is essential to improve
the scavenging flow, and especially the trapping efficiency of the engines.
A special test stand has been developed by D2T group to visualize and
quantify the scavenging process.

Emission and consumption reduction for two-stroke gasoline engine
In order to meet future emission standard, different concepts have been
implemented on a small two-stroke engine. Significant gains have been
observed concerning polluant emissions as well as fuel consuption. These
concepts allows small two stroke engine to meet future regulations, keeping
its advantages in price and weight.

Another way for automatic ECU calibration
D2T's concept of a one CPU system for full ECU calibration. This new concept
takes all benefits of recent computer improvement in order to get rid
of old and heavy system architecture. Dedicated user interface and integrated
command to optimisation tools and ECU application systems are merged one
same CPU as automation system.

P.A.R.I.S.
Evolution of automotive diesel engines has led to the production of smaller
and smaller engines with increasingly higher torque. The reduction in
external dimensions means smaller flywheels, and the increase of torque
rates, higher cyclic irregularities that today's flywheels even with a
dual mass techniques are no longer able to cope with. The best solution
to cope with these problems is a tuned rotating pendulum : P.A.R.I.S.
(Pendulum Acyclism Reducer Integrates System). This vibration absorber
system can be easily integrated into a standard engine flywheel.

New approach to measure instantaneous angular behaviour of a dual mass
flywheel
The analysis of angular behaviour of a Dual Mass Flywheel (or any other
flywheel) is very important to understand and identify noises that occur
in the transmission. The reduce space between engine and gearbox doesn’t
allow any complex instrumentation like the use of an encoder for instance.
D2T has developped a new method to measure the angle position of the flywheel
based on a system called FURD, which computes in real time the angular
deviation, and make easier the friction analysis.

SMAC
Gas entrainment in engine oil circuit generates many problems. A new oil
gas content measurement apparatus, the SMAC, has been developped by IFP
and D2T. It is able to measure the volumetric gas to oil ratio at any
point of the engine oil circuit while running, without influencing the
pressure or temperature of the oil.
